| Rating: 5.7/10 - Add Rating and Comment Did you know in some cultures it is normal for toddlers to sleep with their parents? While some parents actually follow this particular method; it is, for many not an appropriate way to raise a child. Let’s discuss toddlers: what to do when your toddler prefers to sleep with you.
There are several reasons why toddlers would want to sleep with their parents. One of which is a bad dream; or needing to feel close to mom or dad. If your child acts up, and you take them into your room, you are only prolonging the problem. By your actions, they think if they scream and yell long enough, you’ll give in.
Try to determine why your child wants to sleep with you. What is it about their own bed that causes them such angst? According to some studies, you may be able to find the cause by using dolls to allow your child to articulate the problem. Using different scenarios, you may find the root cause of the problem. Another method is to have your child draw pictures delineating why they take preference over their bed to yours. You may find that your child does indeed suffer from bad dreams; nightmares; fear of the dark; being alone, or perhaps the fear of growing up.
In order to stabilize your child’s fears, whatever they may be, devise a plan to encourage your toddler to stay in their own room. Add a playful nightlight or lamp to the room; purchase a very large stuffed animal as a comfort toy; or put a CD player in her room with a favorite song to be played whenever fear strikes. Perhaps paint stars on the ceiling which glows in the dark. Every night your toddler can wish upon a star!
Talk to your child in a loving and comforting way, and ensure him or her that you are just a few feet away; that you will not let any monster steal them from you; and that you are very proud of them for acting so grown up. Children need to feel safe at all times. By giving them the love and understanding they need, you will eventually have a restful night’s sleep.
